Is This Really Experts vs Pragmatism?
Accessibility overlays sit at the center of a heated debate. Vendors promise rapid improvement, lower cost and simplified compliance. Courts have made clear that a widget alone does not equal legal protection. That distinction matters.
At the same time, the discussion is often framed in extremes. Critics frequently focus on what overlays cannot do, citing every technical standard they do not address. Many of those voices are fee-based specialists whose work depends on deep manual remediation. Their technical arguments may be valid, but the commercial context is rarely acknowledged.
The practical question is different. What improves real user experience today? Color contrast remains one of the most common failures across the web. Font resizing, spacing controls and high contrast views can materially improve usability for older users and non-technical visitors who do not adjust browser or operating system settings. For many, one click is the difference between usable and frustrating.
Poor implementation can interfere with assistive technology or search visibility. That is a deployment issue, not an unavoidable outcome. Overlays are not a substitute for structured governance. Nor are they inherently useless.
The debate is often presented as perfect native compliance versus failure. The reality is more nuanced. Technology can improve accessibility when positioned honestly. Marketing promises of immunity create risk. Evidence, transparency and oversight create confidence.

The IAAP convened a working group chaired by Ken Nakata to examine what overlays can and cannot do, and establish best practices to prevent misleading marketing and ensure accurate classification of capabilities.

What Appears in Claims
Color contrast, missing alt text and form errors appear repeatedly in ADA claims. Some require structural remediation; others, like contrast, can be improved quickly through technical controls. Reducing a common failure does not eliminate risk - it does remove friction.
Who Benefits from Immediate Controls
Older users represent a significant share of web traffic and rarely adjust accessibility settings. Controls for contrast, spacing and text size improve usability - that is experience improvement, not full compliance. Technology can improve access quickly. It should not be sold as immunity.
